How to Choose Your First Moissanite Watch

2 mins. By KSquare Gems

A moissanite watch is a statement piece, but the best ones are also comfortable enough to wear every day. If this is your first, four decisions do most of the work: the size of the case, how the stones are set, what sits inside the case, and the metal tone.

Start with case size

Case diameter decides how the watch sits on your wrist. As a rough guide, 36 to 39 mm reads as classic and understated, 40 to 42 mm is the most common everyday size, and anything larger makes a deliberate statement. Measure your wrist, then look at how the lugs sit: they should not hang over the edge.

Look closely at the stone setting

How the stones are set matters as much as how many there are. Look for even rows, stones of matching size, and prongs that sit flush. On a well-made piece, light moves across the surface in one sheet instead of flashing from a few bright spots.

  • Fully iced: case, bezel, dial and bracelet are all set with stones.
  • Semi iced: stones on the bezel and dial, with a polished bracelet for contrast.
  • Diamond bezel: stones on the bezel only, the quietest of the three.

Decide on the movement

A quartz movement runs on a battery, keeps very accurate time and needs little attention. An automatic movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist and has a sweeping second hand. Neither is better; quartz suits someone who rotates watches, automatic suits someone who wears one piece most days.

Pick a metal tone you will actually wear

White tones are the most versatile and make the stones look brightest. Yellow gold tones are warmer and bolder. Two-tone sits between the two and pairs easily with other jewellery. Choose the tone that matches what you already own.

Before you order

Check the bracelet length and whether links can be removed, read the care instructions, and keep the box and paperwork. A first watch chosen this way tends to stay in rotation for years.
