Most gift mistakes are about fit

When a jewelry gift misses, it usually misses on size rather than taste. A ring half a size too small ends up in a drawer. A watch that slides down over the hand gets worn twice and then put away. So before you fall for a design, be honest about how much you know about the person’s measurements, and let that decide what kind of piece you buy.

It helps to sort everything into three groups: pieces that need no size, pieces that can be adjusted later, and pieces that need one exact number.

A moissanite pendant, a ring and an iced out watch side by side, labeled No size needed, Size needed and Fit adjustable
Pendants need no size, rings need an exact one, and watches can be taken in with links or strap holes.
  • Pendants need no size. Ours are 925 sterling silver set with VVS1 moissanite and are sold without a chain, so the only real question is what they will hang it on.
  • Watches can be adjusted. A metal bracelet is shortened by taking out links and a rubber strap has a row of holes. A rough idea of wrist size is enough.
  • Rings need the right size. A plain solid gold band can usually be resized by a jeweler. A ring with stones set most of the way around it is much harder, and sometimes impossible, to resize without disturbing the stones.

Finding sizes without asking

You can usually get the numbers you need without spoiling the surprise. Each measurement has a couple of quiet routes.

Three cards labeled Ring size, Wrist size and Chain length, each listing two discreet ways to find the measurement
Each measurement has at least two quiet routes: borrow a ring or ask a friend, check their current watch, or measure a chain they already wear.

Ring size

  • Borrow a ring they already wear on the finger you have in mind. Trace the inside edge on paper or measure the inside diameter in millimeters, then put it back before it is missed. Our ring size guide converts the measurement.
  • Ask a friend or relative who knows them well. They may already know the size, or can borrow a ring for you with a better excuse than you have.

Match the finger and the hand. A ring from the left little finger tells you very little about the right ring finger. Fingers on the dominant hand often run a little larger, and a ring has to slide over the knuckle, so a borrowed ring that sits loose at the base may still be the right size.

Wrist size

  • Check the watch they wear now. On a strap, the worn, stretched hole shows where they fasten it. On a metal bracelet, close the clasp, lay it on its side and run a piece of string around the inside to get the circumference.
  • Ask someone who lives with them to measure a watch left on the dresser overnight.

Chain length

Because our pendants come without a chain, check what they already own. Lay one of their chains flat and measure it end to end, clasp included, or look at a few photos to see whether it sits at the base of the neck, on the collarbone or lower on the chest. Then look at the bail, the loop the chain passes through. A thick link chain will not fit through a small bail, so compare the two before you buy; Pairing a Pendant With the Right Chain shows how. If you are still choosing a design, Pendant Styles Explained walks through the main types.

Read their style before you choose

The best clue is what they already wear every day. Look at their watch case, belt buckle, glasses frames and any rings. If it is all silver-toned, a white-metal pendant or a steel watch slots straight in. If they lean toward yellow, a two-tone watch with 14K gold plating or a solid 14K gold ring will feel familiar. Rose gold is more personal; buy it when you have seen them wear it, not because it photographs well.

Scale matters as much as color. Someone who wears small studs and a thin chain will probably reach for a small round solitaire pendant more often than a large custom piece. Someone already wearing big pieces may find a small pendant easy to forget. When you are torn between two sizes, the smaller one tends to get worn more.

Think about their day too. A person who works with their hands, lifts weights or washes a lot of dishes takes rings off constantly and knocks them when they forget. A pendant under a shirt is easier. Our watch listings advise against wearing them while swimming or in the rain, so a watch is a weaker pick for someone who never takes theirs off.

Matching the piece to the occasion

OccasionGood choiceWhy it works
BirthdayPendantNo size to guess, and easy to match to their taste.
Graduation or a new jobWatchWorn daily and tied to a milestone they will remember.
AnniversaryRing or pendantA ring only if you are sure of the size; otherwise a pendant.
Holidays, no big occasionSmall pendantLow pressure and goes with almost everything.

Safe choices when you are unsure

  • A small or medium round solitaire pendant in silver, which works with most chains and most wardrobes.
  • A watch in the metal color they already wear, with a bracelet that can be taken in.
  • Designs without names, initials or dates unless you are certain they are right. Personal text is the part people are most particular about.
  • Skip the ring if you have no size and no way to get one.
Tell them what it is
Plenty of people assume any clear, sparkly stone is a diamond. Say in your card or in person that it is moissanite set in 925 sterling silver (or steel, or 14K gold). It avoids an awkward moment later and tells them how to look after it.

Keep the box and the order details

Hold on to the original box, the packaging and your order confirmation email until it is clear that the size and style are right. Read our Refund & Return Policy before you buy, so you know where you stand if something needs to change. If a size turns out to be wrong, email [email protected] with your order number before taking the piece to a local jeweler.

Add a short care note

A few handwritten lines in the box do more than a printed leaflet. Keep it simple:

  1. Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing to remove skin oils.
  2. Store it on its own so the stones do not scratch other pieces.
  3. Take it off for the gym, the shower and the pool.
  4. Clean the stones gently with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush when they look dull.
Keep the note short
Four lines on the back of the gift card is plenty. Point them to How to Care for Silver and Gold Jewelry if they want the full version.

Frequently Asked Questions

A pendant. It needs no size at all. Ours are sold without a chain, so check that they own a chain that fits through the bail.

Borrow a ring they wear on the same finger and measure the inside diameter, or ask a close friend or relative who can find out for you. Make sure it is the same finger on the same hand.

Yes. Metal bracelets are shortened by removing links, which a jeweler or watch shop can do quickly. Rubber straps adjust with the buckle holes.
