Your First Iced Out Piece: Where to Start

Quick Facts

Most of it on one anchor piece

Start with your ordinary week

Forget the big night out for a moment. Picture a normal Tuesday: the clothes you wear to work or class, the things you do with your hands, the T-shirt or collared shirt you reach for first. The right first piece is the one that fits that day, because that is where it will spend most of its life.

People who start with the loudest piece they can find often end up wearing it twice. People who start with something they can put on every morning tend to wear it constantly, and then add to it with a clearer idea of what they like.

Pendant, ring or watch

Each of the three does a different job. Here is how they compare as a first buy. If listing terms such as VVS, pavé or bust down are new to you, the Iced Out Jewelry Glossary explains them.

Decision flow starting with Wear it daily, branching to pendant, ring or watch with a one-line reason for each
Start with how you will wear it. Each branch ends at the piece that suits that kind of day.

A pendant is the easiest start. It needs no size, it sits on your chest where it rarely hits anything, and you can tuck it under a shirt for an interview or a family dinner. Our pendants are 925 sterling silver with VVS1 moissanite and come without a chain, so plan for one. A heavier pendant needs a sturdier chain; Pairing a Pendant With the Right Chain covers length, width and the bail.

A ring is the piece you see most, since it is in your eyeline all day. That is the appeal and the catch. Hands hit door frames, steering wheels and gym bars, and the stones on top of a ring take those knocks first. You also need your exact size, which our ring size guide helps with.

A watch has the most presence and it is useful. Most of ours have a 42 mm stainless steel case and a mineral crystal, and the listings advise against wearing them while swimming or in the rain. If you are near water a lot, or have a slim wrist, a pendant may suit you better as a first piece.

Silver, gold-tone or solid gold

The metal decides how the piece ages, so it is worth understanding before you choose a color.

  • 925 sterling silver is bright and white. It can tarnish if it sits unworn in damp air, but it cleans up and does not wear through.
  • Gold plating gives you the yellow or rose color over a base metal. It is a thin layer, so it wears first where the piece rubs, such as clasps, edges and the underside of a watch bracelet. It can be replated.
  • Solid 14K gold, which a few of our rings use, is gold all the way through. It scratches like any metal but there is no layer to wear off. It costs more for that reason.
  • Stainless steel on our watch cases is hard-wearing and does not tarnish. Our two-tone and rose watches add 14K gold plating on top.

How big to go

Listing photos make every piece look the same size, so check the dimensions in the description wherever they are given. For a first pendant, small to medium is the safe zone. A statement piece looks great in photos but it is heavy, it pulls on the chain, and it can flip around if the chain is too thin.

Small, medium and statement moissanite pendants in a row, each labeled by size
Small and medium pendants are the easiest to wear daily. Statement pieces need a sturdier chain and work best on their own.
Try the paper test
Cut a piece of paper to the height and width of the pendant you are considering and tape it to your shirt where it would hang. Look in a mirror from across the room. It is a quick, honest preview of the scale.

Splitting the budget

Put most of what you plan to spend into the one piece you will wear daily, rather than dividing it across several. If that piece is a pendant, leave room for a decent chain: a weak chain that snaps can take the pendant with it. Set a little aside for care too. A soft brush and a polishing cloth are enough to keep moissanite and silver looking right.

Build from one anchor piece

Your first piece becomes the anchor that sets the metal color and the scale for what comes next. If you start with a steel watch with an iced bezel, a silver pendant matches it straight away. If you start with a two-tone yellow watch, it bridges both colors, so a silver or a gold-tone pendant will work with it.

Scale follows the same logic. A medium pendant pairs well with a watch of normal size. Two oversized pieces worn together compete with each other, so if you want a statement piece, let it be the only one in the outfit.

Then give it a month before buying the next thing. Wear it to work, out at night and around the house. You will find out which metal color you reach for, if the size still feels right once the novelty wears off, and how often you actually clean it. That month tells you more about piece number two than any amount of scrolling.

Think about where you will wear it

Iced pieces catch light, and they catch attention. That is part of the point, but it is worth thinking about the places you go. A pendant can be tucked under a collar on a late train or in a crowded place, which a large ring or watch cannot. If your days include a lot of public transport, travel or nights out, that is one more reason a pendant makes an easy first piece.

Skip the trend haul

The common first mistake is buying three cheaper pieces that are popular this month instead of one good one. Trend pieces date quickly, and three of them mean three things to clean and store. The piece you will still wear in a few years is usually simpler: a round solitaire, a clean pavé shape, a watch in one color.

Know what moissanite needs
Moissanite is hard and keeps its polish, but skin oil and lotion build up on the back of the stones and dull them. A quick clean brings the sparkle back. Read What Is Moissanite? so you know what you are buying.

When you are ready to choose, a small or medium piece from our pendants is a good place to begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most people a small or medium pendant. It needs no size, it is easy to wear every day and it rarely takes knocks. Remember to budget for a chain.

Match what you already wear, such as your watch, glasses or belt buckle. Sterling silver and steel suit most people; gold plating gives a yellow look but wears over time at contact points.

Small to medium. Cut a paper template to the pendant's size and tape it to your shirt to check the scale before you buy.

It can be, if you know your exact size and do not work heavily with your hands. Rings take more knocks than pendants and are always on show.
